eHarvey, the online program at The Harvey School, is ready for its eighth consecutive year of online summer sessions. Students can earn full course credit in just 7 weeks with our summer program.

Our program seeks to give all students the opportunity to take their education in their own hands. Our original intent was to offer online summer school for students who wanted to reinforce content learned in the previous year of traditional school or get a head start on content that would be covered in their next year of traditional school; however, as the program grew, we recognized that students wanted to earn full credit and use their summer to advance!

Our students are given a full year’s worth of academic content in math, world language, English…basically whatever course they want. We use a digital curriculum provided by Apex Learning, which offers a full range of courses for secondary school. We supplement the online content with teacher interaction through a multitude of technologies, including phone, IM, Skype, text messaging and, best of all, a fully interactive online classroom via Blackboard Collaborate. The best part is that, through these technologies, we have been able to connect all over the world and have taught diplomatic students in Qatar, students abroad in China, and students on vacation in the Caribbean.

According to an article in the New York Times back in February 2013 , the success rate of students taking online course is diminished when the course are administered without a teacher to moderate and maintain student engagement. The studies referenced in that article where done at the college level. Imagine how teacher involvement affects the success rate in secondary school online courses?

At The Harvey School, and here I mean the bricks-and-mortar school, teachers strive to provide an environment where students get the level of support they need, right when they need it. At the online school, eHarvey, we are doing our best to provide that same level of support for students who, for whatever reason, want to take an online course. We will use any technology we can to do it.

The Harvey School is pleased to announce our eighth consecutive year of the online summer session. This years’ summer session will begin on Monday, June 24 and end on Friday, August 9…Seven weeks of intensive study online with teacher support. The cost of a course is $875 for all courses except for modern languages and AP which require an additional fee due to the need for additional online speaking practice with an instructor.

The cost includes access to Apex (our interactive online curriculum), our content management system for assignments and course management, and Blackboard Collaborate (our fully interactive online classroom). As always, we commit to a 24-hour turnaround time for any student questions, and 1-3 hours each week of online support and instruction from the course instructor. Additional support is available if necessary. The $875 course fee does not include additional materials, which may be required for certain courses, or the $50 non-refundable registration fee.

In addition to taking a full-year of course content for complete credit, we also offer credit recovery program that will allow students to earn partial credit for courses. Our credit recovery program goes beyond the traditional summer school program by allowing students to customize the course content they need to make up. Students can “test out” of specific content they have mastered and instead focus on the content they struggled with…the topics that landed them in summer school to begin with!

eHarvey summer session is not just for Harvey students; it allows any student to get a taste of the Harvey experience!

Interested in knowing what it is? How it got started? Why? This is an interesting (and quick) article to read that explains where the credit hour came from. It is good to understand this concept and why it came to be if we are going to truly revolutionize education in this country. Take a peek!

After reading, you will begin to understand why it was so important for eHarvey to offer curriculum content that students can learn at a more flexible pace. Student can enroll and complete the content in less time, or more time if necessary, that is available to them in a traditional classroom. Imagine mastering content before moving on to new content!

The Harvey School is planning to launch an online school program that will run during a traditional school year. The program is expected to be ready for September 2010. In keeping with our integrated method of combining independent online learning with experienced teacher support, we will be able to offer a wide range of courses from basic math to AP Biology. Our list of course offerings will also include electives, such as Music Appreciation, Art Appreciation and Psychology.
Our courses for both summer school and our new online school take into consideration students of varying abilities and learning styles by offering different modes of instruction (auditory, visual, tactile), varying levels of support, and a flexible self-paced schedule.
This online school model is perfect for students who are home schooled, student athletes and professionals, and students who may need to miss a significant portion of their regular school year due to travel, illness, etc.

In September, Harvey will open its doors, it’s virtual doors that is, to non-Harvey students who wish to take AP courses for credit and preparation for the AP exams in May 2010. Many schools are eliminating their AP programs and many students who are homeschooled don’t have the opportunity to take AP courses. Harvey’s program will allow these students the opportunity to take these courses and receive Harvey credit and all the benefits that come from the AP curriculum.

It looks great on a college application and may increase the chance of getting accepted

The content, commitment and effort prepare student for harder classes in college

Students can earn college credit by taking and passing the AP exam

Studies have shown a correlation between performance in AP courses and success in college

The program will use the same online curriculum content that Harvey uses during its summer program, but will extend from mid-September through the AP exams in May. The curriculum content, which has been approved by The College Board, includes a separate AP review module for students to use prior to the AP exams. Live online meetings with the instructor will occur during the evenings and, potentially over weekends, so as not to interfere with students’ regular school schedule. Contact us for more information about courses being offered and pricing.
